‘Do you mind if I stay here while you two go back?’ Reagan asked.

Last night they’d agreed to book their flights home in the morning. Freddie was nervous about confronting Adrian, but it was nearly half-term and she was itching to see Harry. And Neil had clearly reached the outer edges of his tolerance about Tamsin’s absence. Freddie had answered the telephone to him the other night, and detected a trace of irritation in his usual joke about getting his wife back. He was right – Tamsin should be there, not here.

Reagan’s question didn’t surprise her. ‘We’d need to ask Grace,’ she said. ‘It’s not my house, remember?’

‘Can you think of any reason why she wouldn’t want me to stay? The house would be safer if I was here, wouldn’t it?’

But Freddie was a little worried. ‘I’m just not sure it’s the best idea.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Well, you’d be here on your own, wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t that get a bit lonely? A bit depressing?’

Reagan shook her head. ‘I think it’s the best possible thing I could do. It’s exactly what I need, some alone time.’

‘I think you need to talk.’

‘I don’t have anything to say that won’t sound ridiculous or self-pitying.’

‘I’m sure that’s not true.’

‘And I don’t want to say it out loud. I want to get over it. And the best way I can do that is to be on my own.’

Freddie couldn’t help thinking that the fierce streak of independence in Reagan was a large part of what was wrong, but she knew the expression on her friend’s face: she wouldn’t change her mind.
